Why are elephants being poached
Elephants are being for the ivory in their tusks. When they kill the elephant and get the tusk, they ship the ivory to countries such as India and Japan. The African officials are allowing people with special permits to hunt elephants. Animal welfare groups in South Africa are angry about the decisions to allow people to kill one of the most intelligent species in the world. Debate has occurred due to this decision.
In the past zoos were known to display animals (and they still do) but now they are using them as a safe habitat for animals threatened by poaching. Zoo workers are often faced with many challenges with the animals. The main question is whether to house a Bull Elephant and if they should give the animal the food it needs. Because of the poaching of the parent elephants it leaves the young to run unprotected from natural predators. Since this happens they don't learn to stay with the herd often resulting with the death of the baby elephant.
